A Short Record Of The Porsche Car

You have most likely heard of the Porsche automobile, and perhaps you have even ridden in one or possibly own one. However you may well not know where the Porsche actually came from. With the account of the Porsche car, it is difficult to say what the actual beginning was. The first car to be named Porsche was released in 1948, and in 1950 Max Hoffman introduced the Porsche 356 to the United States. But the actual beginning of the Porsche history was probably in 1875, when, in a Bohemian village called Haffersrdorp, a son was born to the local tinsmith.

He was named Ferdinand Porsche, and even though his technical genius wasn't thought to have the necessary discipline for the skills of engineering. The only formal education he had was some part-time study in engineering in Vienna, and when he was 25 he turned to automibile design for a career. He was a brilliant engineer, but headstong, as he became linked to all of the leading car manufacturers in Germany, at one time or another. A dozen of the most technically important vehicles in history were designed by Porsche. The SSK line, developed with his aide while he worked for Mercedez-Benz, is still one of the most awe-inspiring ever.

Porsche afterwards set up his own engineering consulting group, which became Porsche A.G., after he was let go from Mercedes. He was against their engineering policies and was ultimately asked to resign. A number of people with exceptional skills decided to join him, and he had a preference for racing cars and sports cars. Their unique abilities were in high demand, with the deluxe sedan from Austria, the Steyr, being one of their projects. A prototype was built, though the project was finally abandoned. Their expert services were also used by Audi, then named Auto Union, who were the first car maker to develop front-wheel drive economy cars.

The V-12 engine, and the V-16, that had been supercharged, were developed by them for the mid-engine Grand Prix racing cars. Auto racing within the European circuit ended up being dominated by them, in combination with the Mercedes-Benz racer, for a period of nearly ten years. For a time after that, NSU and Zundapp equally used their best-known designs. The rear-mounted engine, as well as the patented torsion-bar suspension, were one or two Porsche's prototypes. Given that the two companies did not move on the designs fast enough for Porshe, he got the German government to buy the concept. Porsche supervised the development of a factory at Wolfsburg, where his design finally went into manufacture. His car was known as the Type 60 in his drawings, and it came to be known as the Volkswagen Beetle.

Over the last 100 years or more the engineering firm of Porsche has produced a lasting impression on the car industry. Automobile development and engineering have benefitted from the sustained and exceptional contribution of the Porsche family.
