Working At Home And Public Holidays, Arranging Your time Off For Best Effect.
Today is a bank holiday and it’s wet and windy. Even if it hadn’t been such poor weather I would be unwilling to make any travel plans. Whilst it’s very pleasurable to make the most of public holidays the fact that I work from home renders this just about meaningless. Because I work from home I can arrange my breaks much better than most people. The consequence is that I don’t need to take a public holiday off if I do not want to. Because a lot of what I do is online related, doing Online jobs of one type or another, I can function extremely effectively if the rest of the nation is taking a day off.
There are two up sides to all of this. One is that I can get on with some tasks in the knowledge that I am unlikely to be distracted. The telephone is unlikely to ring as work colleagues and customers expect that I am taking time off. So deep concentration Work from home tasks like writing can be carried out without interruption and I can get as much completed on one public holiday as two normal working days. I could even make use of this fact to excuse taking not one but two days off in compensation at a later date!
Secondly I am able to avoid the hassle of public holiday travel. It seems that wherever you travel on a public holiday these days you share the road with the rest of the nation. This is particularly annoying when the weather is fine, it’s so annoying to be stuck in traffic when the sun is blazing down. Which brings me on to the last point. No one seems able to forecast what the weather will be like on a public holiday. But, because I work from home I can in effect plan my own personal public holidays at the last second and be sure that I take a break when the weather is at its’ best.
