Mexico City - A Lively Area With A Fascinating History
Mexico City, the capital city of Mexico, has a little bit of everything: archaeological sites, a colorful cultural heritage, a deep and interesting historical background, a lively city scene, fun markets, and plenty of opportunities for excitement. Once the Aztec capital city of Tenochtitlan, the area has been inhabited for a very long time, and it continues to grow. It is one of the most populated cities in the world with around 20 million people, and it definitely resides among the busiest cities in the world. That being said, it is a great place to vacation in. Before you go, you and your family will need passports or U.S. passport cards.
A passport card is relatively new option, and they serve as alternatives to the traditional passport with some pluses and some minuses. The passport card is the same size and shape as any other card in your wallet. It will cost about $45 each, but this is much cheaper than the standard passport. However, it can only be used to travel by car or boat, and it can only be used to travel to Bermuda, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. If a passport card sounds like the best option for you, log on to a passport service site and get yours. There are a variety of other passport services available as well, such as those that can replace a passport lost, get you a new passport if yours is damaged, and even change the name on your passport if you are recently married.
You will find that historical landmarks are scattered all throughout the city, and this makes it fun to just explore. One very important spot is Plaza de la Constitución, also known by locals as Zocalo. This huge square is the second largest in the world, right behind the famous Red Square in Moscow. In the square are several must-see landmarks, including the National Palace, the City Hall, and the Cathedral. This Cathedral is the largest in the Americas, and if you go inside, you will see an altar made completely out of gold. The Basílica de Guadalupe, located outside the Plaza, is known as the holiest Catholic place in the Americas.
One of the most historically and culturally relevant landmarks is the Templo Mayor, formerly the chief temple in the Aztec Empire. It's only recently been excavated, and archaeologists are coming across new artifacts all the time. This temple was the primary spot for Aztec ceremonies of all kinds, and its unearthing was an important part in Mexican history. Just outside the city is the famous Aztec city of Teotihuacan, the "City of the Gods." This is home to the massive Pyramid of the Sun, the biggest pyramid by volume in the world.
Chapultepec Park and zoo is a large area that contains many great things to see and do, including the impressive Museum of Anthropology, the zoo, and several other museums and attractions. The Palacio de Bellas Artes is another culturally important spot. It is a theatre that features famous murals as well as hosts concerts and other performances.
Whatever sort of vacation you are looking to have, Mexico City, with its variety of opportunities,s is a great place to look into. Begin your trip by acquiring United States passport cards for yourself and your family. Don't forget that any other passport service - replacement for a passport lost, a new passport, or a renewal of a passport - can be all done online.
